there were around 1930. I read a little about he and I can not believe … Was it real? Could really do things on the ground that it did? (ie, operating from a power source ….[ distant Niagara Falls power station?])

Tesla was a brilliant inventor and I can not even imagine the wonders that have been in his mind. But this story is hog wash. It was supposed to harness the energy of the ether (or ether), an invisible medium is assumed to exist in 19 and early theories of 20th century physics. the old theories, as they are interesting and give you respect for what scientists are trying to solve, and how the scientific method has refined and enhanced our knowledge of what is real.
