Hybrid Car Mileage

Hybrid Car Mileage
Why the new hybrid cars get worse mileage than ever?

I remember a few years when the new hybrid came out, they stopped about 60 miles per gallon. Now, the Prius is just 45 miles per gallon, that is, is about 7 miles of a Corolla, but almost twice the price! What's happening?

Hi, this is a couple of questions that need detailed answers big, so stay with me. 1. There are several levels of full hybrid, mild and partial. There are many more hybrids of many more manufacturers on multiple levels, so if you see "hybrid" in the rear of a vehicle, there can be a significant jump in mpg if it is a partial hybrid or mild (the gas engine runs whenever a partial or minor moves or start the AC). Even five years ago, there was nowhere near the number of different types of hybrids on the road with mpg around the place (the Insight and Prius 1 third generation were brought to the U.S. more than 10 years). 2. There was no change in the way that vehicles were submitted for evaluation by the EPA were tested. Not all vehicles must be presented or not you can stop testing before being sold without the EPA numbers on their stickers (large vehicles and very new models). Each vehicle mpg went down with the testing of new regulations, which had not been updated substantially since the 1970s. With a vehicle of returned 22 to 24 mpg combined, a loss of 10% is much less clear that a vehicle to get 50-60 mpg. 3. When the original thinking and the gene for the 1st and 2nd Prius came out, corn ethanol was not as prevalent as it is now. Corn Ethanol is grain alcohol and decreases mileage, because it is not as dense as the energy standard gasoline. You just do not get much "bang for the buck." 4. Besides ethanol, Toyota also reduced the mileage shortly after updates of EPA when the Gen 2 Prius began selling in the large number who did. Toyota realized that after the early adopters were overcome by the general public to buy Prius, the experience of drivers in general would be reduced because of MPG would not be interested in maintaining the effort to maximize mpg as early adopters. This does not mean that all persons who bought after 2006 Prius are carrying as a normal car and get 35 mpg, but not enough just get in the 40s that Toyota did not push for what the actual mileage should be. This has been my experience in talking and working with hundreds of people in recent 5 years for Toyota. The driver activates the system and work to earn miles in the 50's as a year of average long (my average is 51.7 in the Upper Midwest with AC and stereo). The disk controllers are just getting the 30's and 40's. Ok, next part of the question, I compare the Corolla and Prius. This is a common mistake. The Corolla, as good as is, is not equal to the Prius. The Prius is actually equal to the Camry in power, features and options, and the Camry in reality does not match with the Prius in some of the features and options, including hybrids court. While the '09 Corolla is now the choices of the past generation. Camry 2.4-liter gas engine, navigation system, and features traction and stability control, the options, features pale before those Prius in 2010. 2010 Prius – has no mechanical power steering pump or belt of government – no AC belt – no water pump belt – the AC is totally unrelated to electric and gas engine – the exhaust gases are cooled and diverted to burn a second time in the gas engine and is available with a pre-crash accident System (PCS) using a laser-guided cruise control automatically retract the seatbelts and applying the brakes in case of accident. Thus, a comparison a base Corolla $ 16,100 to $ 22,750 base Prius is not a fair comparison (and $ 6,650, while a bit of money, is about twice the price). A 2010 Corolla is EPA rated 26/34 and a Prius 2010 is estimated at 51/48, a difference of 25 plus 14 more of the city and highway, so the mileage is not comparable, and the difference is much more than 7 miles per gallon. Just to cover the Corolla 2008 (last generation) obtained 26 and 35 of the city and highway 2009 Prius (2nd generation) obtained 48 of the city and Route 45, or 22 more over the city and 10 highway, one giant leap, even with the generations and more than 7 miles per gallon again. Only I can talk technically to Toyota, but the EPA testing and ethanol effects will be for any vehicle by any manufacturer of hybrids included.
