Which is better for the environment to buy a used car with good mileage or buying a shiny new hybrid?

I just noticed a lot of tree huggers buy hybrids .. I thought if you really cared and thought about what they were doing .. They would buy a used car, making use of resources before being discarded.

In general, somtheing as a 'new' used Corolla or Civic (05-07 with low mileage) is "greener" than a Prius. remanufacture any pollution to disperse, but new enough not to spit in the air trash. about half of the pollution any car does is when you are doing.
